The Impeded Stream

I heard a beautiful quote today:

"It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings." Wendell Berry

Wendell Berry seems like a pretty cool guy (and he shares my birthday). What I love about this quote is that it resonates on lots of levels for me.

Particularly, at the moment, as I prepare for my new job and take a leap out of my comfort zone, I feel vulnerable and unsure of my footing. To look at it from Berry's angle is to see that actually now - when I'm unsure of whether the parachute will open - is when the real work starts. It's when you're facing new challenges that you grow and learn. I love the imagery of the impeded stream. I can picture a rushing, mountain stream singing and bubbling it's way round a boulder and that's a refreshing, renewing image to hold in my mind.
